Art students played pen pal with children from the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Society. Youngsters listed their ideas for a customized sock monkey and Reno High School Crafts classes rose to the challenge. The exchange was not only fun but meaningful for all involved.
When high school students learn to crochet, it’s a beautiful thing!
It’s even better when they connect that skill with Service Learning.
About 200 Reno High School Art students perfected the skill of crochet and turned that skill into a large blanket for the Children’s Cabinet of Northern Nevada. When Mrs. Lauren Gandolfo, their teacher, asked the facility what their mostly homeless children wanted for Christmas, blankets was the answer. Not toys, games or money! Hearts sank when art students heard this. In response, students took their skills to the crochet hook and made a community blanket!
